Abstract

Cultural competence in health care has been a matter of interest to many health care scholars and practitioners and managers in recent decades. Cultural competence in health care emphasizes acknowledging and respecting the patient's culture to provide behaviours communications and care that are consistent with the patient's cultural beliefs and desires. Cultural competence is an important component of health care delivery because issues of health care quality and satisfaction are the concerns of all individuals, especially for the ethnic minorities due to increasing health disparities. Therefore, cultural competence has been recommended as a strategy to reduce disparities in health care and improve the effectiveness of health care for people. Based on the synthesis and analysis of documents, this article contributes to clarifying the concept of cultural competence, the relationship of cultural competence with the effectiveness of health care for people.
