Abstract

During the French colonial period, the Chinese community in the South became the object of the French’s interest, the French government not only controlled the number of Chinese immigrants to Vietnam but also implemented the taxes on their business. This greatly affects the development process of the Chinese community migrating to Vietnam in general, and their political and social status in particular. Like the Nguyen Dynasty, the French colonial government implemented a policy of “divide and rule” that is, grouping Chinese immigrants into different categories and giving them different rights. The article contributes to clarifying a number of policies of the French government towards the Chinese in the South from 1862 to 1945.
